SARAH

As Sarah leaves the grocery store, she mentally goes through her list again, making sure she has every possible thing Emily could ask for. Charlotte will be dropping her off after school. Sarah is a child at Christmas, beyond excited about another sleepover with her little girl, even as worry threatens to strip her joy. She wants to make sure she gets everything right. If she can make this sleepover perfect and the next one and the next then maybe one day soon… it will simply feel like a normal part of her life.

She is trying not to be resentful about how closely Gideon is watching her.

He saw the evidence of her insomnia last time Emily slept over. When he had left after picking their daughter up, she cursed her own stupidity at not moving the duvet back onto the bed. The whispering man had returned, though she didn’t want to admit it even to herself.

He’d appeared as she dropped off into sleep, as he usually did. Saarah, Saarah . His voice, his nails – the screeching scrape of them rippled through her body. Once again she forced herself to switch on her light and fling open the curtains to the small balcony off her bedroom. She searched for him in the eerie silence of the late night, finding nothing.

Emily, thankfully, slept through it all. She stayed asleep as Sarah lifted her from her bed and took her into the walk-in wardrobe, laying her gently on the floor. Sarah had sat up the whole night, her torch in her hand, listening for him, then, when she was sure he was gone, lifted her daughter gently and returned her to her own bed. In the morning, Emily found her lying on her duvet on the floor and asked, ‘What are you doing, Mum?’ and Sarah lied about a game, telling her the flower duvet was a forest floor where fairies lived.

She is hoping today, tonight, will be different. She wishes she could just relax and enjoy this time with her little girl, but she feels tightly wound, anxiety plucking at her insides.

Last night she took a pill and heard him again, heard the whispering man with his long, curled fingernails. She pulled the duvet over her head, hoping she’d been imagining it, but she needed to check, finally getting out of bed, her torch ready in her hand to shine around the balcony. There was no one there, of course, and she put it down to the effects of the pill and her worry over tonight. She slept deeply after that, and this morning she feels much better, more in control, if a little woozy.
